I was just curious if anyone has any websites they recommend for beginners (programming)? I would really love to enroll in a class but its not within the budget and probably wont be for awhile until we get out of the hole. So I think I could at least start by reading on the internet and preparing.

Sorry, what do you mean, do you want tutorials? Or a programmer, or a good hosting site? |

For beginning programming I liked Tizag.com the best. They have some good PhP tutorials that are clearly explained. Also, w3schools has much of the same material and works well. Google is my other tool. You can find myriad PhP programming tutorials, videos, and forums. I even used to use it by searching the exact php error I got and would get a good answer almost all the time. |

Just be careful -- as the old saying goes, 90% of everything is crap There's a lot of good stuff out there but more of it is not so good. I recommend w3schools for learning the syntax and basic things, and tizag looks more or less the same, but beyond that you'll want to read books and try to pick up as much info as you can on proper organization and good practices. I like Code Complete although it's probably a little too complete for a beginner (No pun intended there... heh...) Portions of the old editions are really out of date, obviously, and it's not PHP-specific, but I've still found it really useful and a good reference. It's a lot easier to start out with good practices rather than picking them up later

Your local library can order off php books from other libraries for you to check out. All you have to do is ask. There's also a few free books online. And I'd suggest php.net, the manual is extremely useful. |

w3schools is great for me, but looking at one site then another is great, so read w3's tutorials then see tizag's and understand it, also a great book is 'Headfirst PHP and MySQL' for beginners ;D |

Slightly off-topic, but the best PHP error ever is unexpected T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM. (In reference to Paige's post, haha, it's not totally random!) |

I usually use Youtube videos - I found a class which took my through EVERYTHING, just listening and exercises, I can pause and listen back instead of reading, skipping and forgetting. If you insist on reading I usually make notes on a pad and paper, read it back before bed and tackle a three chapters per week, revising them three times. Hope that helped
